Ice melt is a de-icing substance used to melt snow and ice on surfaces like roads, sidewalks, and driveways. It typically contains chemicals such as rock salt, calcium chloride, or magnesium chloride, which lower the freezing point of water and cause the snow and ice to melt. The use of ice melt helps prevent slips and falls, and makes travel easier and safer during winter months.
Salt, when used as a de-icing substance, works by lowering the freezing point of water, which prevents ice and snow from forming or melting the ice and snow that has already formed. Rock salt (sodium chloride) is the most commonly used type of salt for de-icing, but other types like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride can also be used due to their lower freezing points. These chemicals can be harmful to vegetation and concrete, vehicles and pets and should be used sparingly and according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
All products carry some risks to pets, but there are some that are deemed "safer" than others. According to PetMD, some of the safest ice melts are the ones with a propylene glycol* base, and while generally recognized as relatively pet-safe, it is not as effective as other ice melt options. Pets and other animals should be kept away from such materials as much as possible.
